Freire's Critical Pedagogy

The Main tenets of Freire's critical pedagogy are the relationship between the oppressor and the oppressed most importantly, how the oppressor used knowledge and social skills to stay ahead of the oppressed and belittle them. Freirs then expresses how only struggling people can liberate themselves instead of getting released. However, due to the never-ending cycle of the oppresses becoming the oppressor, liberation can be more complex than it seems. Freire's educational theory also mentions the banking system, how a teacher teaches, and how the students react to those teachings. The banking system ties in with problem-posing education and how the teacher and student connection can affect learning. In this scenario, the teacher is the oppressor who can change the student's life depending on how the students are taught. Successful students can later introduce new teachings and experiences to those like them.

Culturally responsive teachings will allow the students to grow emotionally and socially while also allowing them to have a sense of what the real world is like and what challenges they can face in the future. By instilling this type of education in the student, teachers can allow for a better lot and a society with good morals and standards since the teachers are the ones who are preparing the students who will eventually lead the end of tomorrow. This kind of education curriculum can, however, also hinder students and their education because it can become something that can overwhelm them quickly if they are already struggling to keep up with the regular curriculum of school. Students might not feel comfortable with this learning process, and it can become problematic for schools to find a way to separate the students who want to be included in culturally responsive teaching and those who do not. Schools will also have to have a proper budget to handle all the activities that come with that curriculum and offer their teachers better pay. It would be unfair to the teachers to be asked to do more if they're not compensated for it.

Throughout this lesson, I needed clarification about culturally responsive teachings. I believed it was just about having a diverse classroom and reading books about diversity. Looking at the picture above, I now understand it is more than that. It makes the students feel more comfortable with the people they are around and the environment that they go into almost every day. Looking further into pedagogy, the relationship between the oppressed and oppressor is not just found in schools. In the future, I hope that everyone gets the same opportunities and is on an even playing field, no matter what differences in their background bring.
